Former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg has given up hope for Dutchman Max Verstappen after his crash in Monaco. The incident, his 5th of 2018, came in FP3 and damaged his hopes of qualifying on pole for Sunday’s race.
Daniel Ricciardo, his team-mate, topped every timesheet over the weekend proving Red Bull had given Verstappen a great car. But he didn’t learn from his mistakes in 2016 as he produced a replica crash at the swimming pool chicane.
The 2016 World Champion had some hard-hitting comments for the 20-year-old Red Bull driver.
“He was faster than Daniel Ricciardo, and then he crashed at the dumbest moment,” said Rosberg when talking to RTL.
“He had an almost identical crash in 2016, I wonder if Max is too confident - risking too much. If you’re doing that, there is no track that bites you in the ass more than Monaco.
“He hasn’t seemed to learn at all. You can’t really say it’s inexperience. It’s a very dark moment for Max. At the moment everything is going wrong for him, but I don’t have much hope for him anymore.”
Verstappen has at least 15 years left in F1 should he want it. Having already had four seasons, Rosberg could be giving up on Max a little too early!
