Some would have thought Toto Wolff would use the Christmas period to celebrate yet another successful year inside the Mercedes garage. But according to the boss himself, any motorsport related chat is "taboo" on Christmas Day.
In his latest interview, Wolff talks about how he's been relaxing since the final day of the season. In 2018, Mercedes were pushed by Ferrari more than ever before, so any time to relax and recover is important. However, he picked up an injury!
"I stayed in Abu Dhabi for a while after the last race and went swimming with my son. While swimming, I wanted to jump over a wave with him in my arms, and that was just a little different from what I had thought. I tore my cruciate ligament for the third time," Wolff looks back at the incident in the German Bild.
Despite the off-season, Wolff has been busy looking ahead to the future, just as all good champions do. With Ocon carless next year, he's keen to keep him involved and has the potential to bring in Mick Schumacher to the Mercedes junior team.
"We know that the competition will do everything to beat our upcoming season, so we have to make sure that we continue to develop. All classes we have participated in as a factory team have been won by us. But that offers no guarantee for the future. And as far as Schumacher is concerned, he has achieved the Formula 3 title with our engine in the back. Now he gets the time to develop."
"Unfortunately, our junior program currently has limited space and I have another priority. To ensure that Esteban Ocon has a place on the grid in Formula 1 again in 2020," Wolff thinks.
Busy, busy and busy again for Wolff. You would almost forget that there are other things in life than work. And although Susie Wolff, the wife of Toto, is also active in motorsport, Wolff's house has one rule: During Christmas, it's all about the family, not about racing.
"It is difficult to conceal the work altogether since racing is even part of our marriage. But car racing is taboo under the Christmas tree. Then we are there for the family. But if we go for a walk on Christmas Day, then I think we'll immediately burst over the work."
