Max Verstappen once again holds the drivers' market in his hands as rumours swirl of him leaving Red Bull Racing. On his podcast, MontoyAS, Juan Pablo Montoya questioned the rumours.
While it is a well-known fact that Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull Racing until 2028, rumours of Verstappen leaving are still at large. It is also well known that Mercedes have shown extreme interest in the Dutch driver. However, Wolff has a strong lineup with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, with the latter claiming he already has a contract extension in place.
However, fresh rumours have emerged that Verstappen could go to McLaren, with Oscar Piastri swapping to Red Bull Racing. Verstappen’s longtime engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, has already been announced as moving to McLaren in 2028.

'Where can Verstappen go?'

Montoya said, “The million-dollar question is: if he were to go somewhere. He already deserves to go somewhere strong. Mercedes. From what I gather from the rumours going around this week, George is already locked in for next year. So, if you're Max, where would you go? If you're already doing better, it doesn't make sense.”

“The problem is, as they say: the grass isn't always greener on the other side; from a distance it looks very nice. But sometimes, when you stand on it, you say, ‘Oh, what did I get myself into. ’ So, that happens. Also, on the other hand, it's that they are all rumours, so that people understand. These are rumours you read, see, and people talk about."

He continued, "On one hand, they say that Mateschitz's son is already mad at Max because Max hasn't committed to staying there, and they're giving him everything on top of the salary they pay him and all. And given everything they've given Max, they find it infuriating that he won't commit to them.”
“On the other hand, Red Bull is doing everything possible for Max to stay. Obviously, everyone wants Max to stay. The problem is that I think what Max is trying to do, in my opinion, is put pressure on them to keep working on the car and everything."
"But if you look at where Red Bull started at the beginning of the year and where Red Bull is today, the car that has developed the most of all is probably the Red Bull. So how are you going to complain?”

Verstappen is currently 7th in the World Drivers’ Championship with 76 points. He is 103 points behind the current leader, Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian is in the running to be Verstappen's teammate if the Dutchman were to go to Mercedes.
