Oscar Piastri has emerged as McLaren’s most consistent driver and currently leads the world championship. However, the British team has yet to officially name him as their number one. Juan Pablo Montoya believes that Lando Norris needs to look at the 'bigger picture' in order to outsmart his teammate.
Lando Norris endured another frustrating weekend in Canada. In an attempt to overtake teammate Oscar Piastri, the Briton was overly ambitious and ended his race into the wall of the pit straight. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has since provided his perspective on the team dynamic at McLaren. Meanwhile, Piastri scored points and finished in fourth place, meaning that Norris saw his points gap to the Australian widen once again. Piastri still leads the 2025 championship on 198 points and has won five races this season. Teammate Norris sits second with 176 points.

Nonetheless, Montoya does not expect McLaren to favour Piastri in the second half of the season. “Lando can win in Austria and Silverstone. He was much quicker than Oscar last year at Silverstone, even when Oscar won. But this is the moment they started doing team orders."
Lewis Hamilton took a famous victory at the 2024 British Grand Prix whilst Lando Norris finished in third. Oscar Piastri finished fourth on that day, but will be hoping for more when the F1 circus rolls back round to the UK after the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix.

'McLaren needs to remind Lando of the bigger picture'

The Colombian driver even believes that Norris could still become champion, despite having a difficult start to the season in comparison to his teammate. However, he needs more guidance from his team if this is to be the case. “The engineers should tell him, ‘You can get him, but be smart about it.’ Someone needs to remind Lando of the big picture. He’s not thinking about it. Oscar is.”
