The Mercedes Formula 1 team has responded cryptically to reports in the British media claiming that Toto Wolff and the German manufacturer are trying to buy a minority stake in the Alpine F1 team.
Earlier on Monday, rumours emerged that Toto Wolff is eyeing the minority stake that Otro Capital currently holds in Alpine. This would see the Austrian outmaneuver his former rival Christian Horner, who had also hoped for some time to acquire this share package in the French team.

Mercedes offers brief comment

Reportedly, there is currently only one party left in the running for Otro’s shares. It is unknown whether that's Wolff with Mercedes. In any case, Mercedes remained fairly tight-lipped when GPblog asked about the veracity of the rumors.
A spokesperson told this site: "Mercedes is a key strategic partner of Alpine and we are being kept apprised of the latest developments."
No denial or confirmation followed when GPblog inquired further.
Since this season, Mercedes and Alpine have had a close relationship. The French team is now one of Mercedes’ customer teams, using the German manufacturer's power units.
