Former Formula 1 driver Anthony Davidson has praised Lewis Hamilton for his driving, which saw him avoid a potential collision with Max Verstappen during the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 46-year-old detailed how both drivers could have made contact if the British driver had not taken to the turn four run off area. Verstappen attempted an overtake on Hamilton, who tried to defend on the 30th lap of the race. However, while the move was being completed by the Red Bull driver, both drivers came a little too close to comfort — an incident that was subsequently noted by race control, despite both drivers not making contact.
Davidson, who was on punditry duty for Sky Sports, in his analysis of the event, stressed how Hamilton avoided the contact in that incident:
“…So I think that there was no contact. Lewis acted accordingly and somehow managed to survive. Many drivers would have just turned in on the normal race at night and there would have been contact. There would have been a high-speed spin. So that's something to consider there. So well done to Lewis for avoiding that one.”
Davidson on the moment that ruined Hamilton’s race
Anthony Davidson also highlighted the moment he believes ruined Lewis Hamilton’s race weekend. The Sky Sports F1 analyst attributed the torrid weekend the seven-time champion endured to his failure to advance past the second round of qualifying.
“But yeah, it's not really the race he wanted today. Not the race that Verstappen wanted either. But that happens when the car hasn't quite got the performance.”
“And luckily for Lewis as well, just those two and a half tenths that he was away from Leclerc in Q2, and then eventually it meant that he couldn't get through to Q3, that's why his day was so difficult today. why his day was so difficult today. And that's, I believe, what he's reflecting on still at this moment right now.”
