The Grand Prix of Russia has been removed from the calendar in 2022 due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since the race was scrapped, more and more circuits have expressed interest in replacing the Grand Prix. Jerez is the latest name eager to host the replacement race.
The 2022 Russian Grand Prix was scheduled for the weekend of September 23 to 25. This race will no longer take place due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, forcing Formula 1 to look for a replacement Grand Prix.

Two races on Spanish soil in 2022

According to the Italian La Gazzetta dello Sport Jerez de la Frontera hopes to take over the spot on the calendar. This will bring back two races in a year on Spanish soil for the first time since 2012.
Juan Marin, the vice president of the Spanish region of Andalusia, reacted happily to the news. "The whole world knows that we want to host a Grand Prix and that's why we went to London one and a half years ago." According to Marin, Jerez could be Formula 1's first choice for a replacement race.

Circuits are lining up

Jerez de la Frontera is not the only track hoping for a raid. Indeed, in recent days Sepang in Malaysia seems to be the main choice to replace Russia. In addition to Sepang, there are many other candidates vying for Sochi's spot.
