Lewis Hamilton has revealed he personally stepped in to help reshape the script for F1: The Movie. "Brad’s crash in the original script was meant to be in Monaco through the last corner, and the car would go into flames"
- Lewis HamiltonThe seven-time world champion, speaking to Vanity Fair, revealed that Martin Donnelly’s horrific crash at Jerez in 1990 — in which the former driver suffered severe internal injuries and multiple leg fractures — inspired him to push for a last-minute change to the script after discussing it directly with Donnelly.
"Brad’s crash in the original script was meant to be in Monaco through the last corner, and the car would go into flames," he said.
The scene was ultimately scrapped from the script, as staging a crash at that spot in Monaco would have felt unrealistic and forced given the low speeds involved.
"It’s a very slow part of the track, and it’s not a place where you would have a crash like that. I said: 'There’s this unbelievable crash with Martin Donnelly, many years ago, where he’s lying on the track. We should use that image.'
"I got in touch with Martin and asked if we could use the footage from the crash. He said: 'Absolutely, I’d be honoured.'
Hamilton addresses potential filmmaking life after F1 career is over
The seven-time world champion has played a central role in bringing the project to life through his film and TV production company, Apollo Down Films.
While he’s been working more behind the scenes than in front of the camera, Hamilton has been instrumental in shaping the script, refining key sequences and ensuring the film stays as true to reality as possible — something he’s pushed for from day one.
Asked whether he might consider moving into directing once he eventually hangs up his helmet,
here’s how he responded.GPblog's latest F1 Paddock Update
