Current Formula 2 championship leader and Mercedes junior driver George Russell is hoping to force himself into a seat on the 2019 Formula One grid, as the youngster recently surprisingly topped the charts on a testing day in Hungary.
Russell is already seen as one of the best talents outside of F1, as the 20-year-old won the GP3 championship last season, and, as previously stated, is currently leading the Formula 2 championship after fourteen races.
"I think things are going really well in Formula 2 right now," Russell told Racer.com.
"It could still be better, no doubt about that, but as a team, we've done a great job at Art GP so far.
"I've been able to show everyone what I can."
Formula 2 champions always go into the Formula One the season after. Usually, the transition is smooth, but there have been exceptions like Stoffel Vandoorne, who has struggled to adapt to F1.
"I think I'm forcing Toto [Wolff] and others to observe me," he continued.
"I hope that at least they see what I can do and how well I work together with my team.
"I'm doing everything I can to put pressure on F1 teams."
It very much looks like Russell will land himself a seat in F1 next season, but the question remains where he'll end up. Mercedes themselves already have Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas locked up for the next few years. Force India or Williams, the other teams that have ties with Mercedes, could have a position opened up, and McLaren too have said that they could have two empty seats for 2019. The silly season has begun.
