For Red Bull Racing, qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix could not have gone better. Max Verstappen captured pole and his teammate Sergio Perez is right next to him on the front row of the grid. This puts the Mexican in a good position to secure second place in the drivers' championship.
Perez will have to look in his mirrors, though, as Charles Leclerc - the only rival for that second spot in the championship - starts from third. However, the Monegasque also knows that Red Bull looks faster than the Ferrari on the long runs. Moreover, the Red Bull men have already indicated they will work together to help Perez to get second place.

Mercedes comes up short

Mercedes looked like a formidable rival for Red Bull during free practice, but the team ultimately came up pretty short. Lewis Hamilton starts from fifth on Sunday. He was about nine tenths slower than Verstappen. Also notable was Sebastian Vettel's performance. In the last qualifying session of his career, he made it to Q3, putting his Aston Martin on the ninth starting spot.
