Max Verstappen had to leave the honours to
Carlos Sainz during the first free practice for the
United States Grand Prix. The world champion spent longer than intended in the
Red Bull Racing garage while his car was being tinkered with and had to settle for P2.
Only in the last ten minutes of the session could Verstappen regain some metres, but apart from the crashed
Antonio Giovinazzi, the Dutchman had by far the fewest laps to his name. Still, he managed to improve to P2 in the final minutes, but in doing so he had to concede two tenths to fastest man Sainz.
Lewis Hamilton parked his Mercedes in third place, a tenth ahead of
Lance Stroll, who had a fine session. Behind it was
Sergio Perez on P5, followed by Fernando Alonso and
George Russell in sixth and seventh respectively.
