Formula E chief spells out 'really important' point to stay distinct from F1

Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds believes the all-electric series does not need Formula 1’s new era to fail in order to succeed.
From this year onwards, Formula 1 has shifted heavily towards electrification, tripling the electric power compared to last season and moving to a 50-50 split with the ICE.
However, this has already caused a number of issues in the opening races, with phenomena such as super clipping — at times extreme — emerging in both qualifying and the race, and, more broadly, an energy management scenario that prevents drivers from fully focusing on pushing the cars to the limit.
Speaking on the Business of Sport podcast, Jeff Dodds suggested Formula 1 has recently taken inspiration from Formula E’s approach, with the championship increasingly focusing on areas where the all-electric series has long excelled.

He stressed, however, that it is crucial for the two categories to remain clearly distinct, warning against the risk of them becoming too similar. While acknowledging there is a degree of competition between the two, Dodds made it clear that Formula E’s success does not depend on Formula 1 struggling.
"There's a lot I look at in Formula 1. I think they do it magnificently. On the other hand, some of the things they're doing more recently, I suspect they're looking over the fence and thinking, what are we doing well? It's really, really important for us that we don't just become two versions of the same thing. We are in competition in some respects, but I don't need them to fail for us to be successful."

He pointed out that Formula E has long specialised in energy management, suggesting that Formula 1 should remain focused on its own championship given that Formula E holds the exclusive position as a fully electric series.
At the same time, he acknowledged that F1’s shift in that direction is indirectly helping Formula E, adding that the success of Formula 1 ultimately has a positive ripple effect on their own category.
