FIA issue verdict on Russell's alleged yellow flag infringement during pole lap

The British driver finished his lap, unlike his teammate Kimi Antonelli, and snatch pole position from Charles Leclerc after Ferrari had looked set for a stunning one-two up to that point.

Leclerc had set a 1:06.3 and looked all but certain to take pole following Verstappen's crash, but Russell stunned everyone with an impressive 1:06.113, finishing more than two tenths clear of the Monegasque.

However, after reviewing the incident, the stewards confirmed that no further investigation was necessary, deeming that the driver had slowed sufficiently, meaning the Brit retains pole position and can celebrate the result.

Speaking immediately after qualifying, Russell said he felt incredible after delivering what he described as an outstanding lap. He explained that he had seen the yellow flag and significantly lifted off the throttle before the final corner, adding that it had been a single yellow flag and that he believed everything had been handled correctly. Russell also praised the team's performance, saying he was proud of the job everyone had done.

The driver left most frustrated was Antonelli, who, after slowing down, could only manage fourth in qualifying. As a result, he will start not only behind his teammate but also behind both Ferraris, which until that point had not looked to be in contention for pole.
