F1 Today | F1 wanted further rule changes for Verstappen, as new Honda engine roars for first time

It was previously announced that the engine regulations will be adjusted from 2027, with the aim of reducing the role of energy management during Grands Prix.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali though has stated that Formula 1 wanted to make further changes, to a point that even Verstappen would have approved.

The changes that were ultimately approved did not go as far as Formula 1 had in mind. He explained that the commercial rights holder wanted the rules to go further, but was dependent on the approval of the teams, manufacturers and the FIA.

“You know very well that we wanted to be even more aggressive on that, but that was what the teams accepted,” the F1 CEO said answering GPblog's question.

Domenicali also believes those additional changes would have gone down well with Verstappen. “I think Max would have been very happy with that.”

On Fernando Alonso's 45th birthday, Aston Martin tested Honda's updated power unit at the Hungaroring today as part of a filming day.

After taking part in the Pirelli tyre test at the Hungaroring a day ago, Aston Martin is completing a filming day at the circuit near Budapest today, as GPblog previously reported.

Honda's Trackside General Manager and Chief Engineer, Shintaro Orihara, previously explained that they are planning to use this updated PU package for the first time during a Grand Prix weekend at Zandvoort.

Aston Martin's car upgrades improved their performance in Hungary and now they will be hoping their upgraded engine will push them even further up the field if it runs in Zandvoort.
