What do the new 2026 engine regulations entail?

In 2026, new engine regulations go into effect for manufacturers. On the engine front, electrical power will increase by about 50 per cent. This happens because the (expensive) MGU-H will disappear from the engine. In addition, the internal combustion engine will have to run entirely on renewable fuel from 2026 onwards. There will also be a budget cap for engine suppliers in F1 from 2026.

The new engine regulations aimed to make the sport more accessible. The engine had to be easier and cheaper to make. This paid off. Besides keeping the current engine manufacturers, Formula 1 also gained a number of manufacturers.
Renault, Mercedes, Ferrari and Honda will remain active in Formula 1 as engine suppliers beyond 2026. Renault again supplies only Alpine, although there are also rumours that it will supply Andretti with engines if the American racing stable is admitted. Mercedes again supplies Mercedes, McLaren and Williams, while Honda will supply engines to Aston Martin from 2026. Ferrari will supply engines to its own team and Haas.

Besides the current engine suppliers, a number of new suppliers are also joining. Red Bull Powertrains is partnering with Ford to supply engines to Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri. Audi is also stepping into F1 and will fully take over Sauber's team from 2026 and also supply its own engines. General Motors will also make its own engines for F1, but will not join until 2028. Initially, General Motors only want to supply engines to Andretti.
