'Don't know if there's enough appreciation for what Hamilton is doing'

Lewis Hamilton is after four Grands Prix on top of the world championship. Where Max Verstappen is still a formidable competitor, the Englishman has the advantage for now. Two-times world champion Fernando Alonso thinks Hamilton gets too little credit.
Both drivers were teammates at McLaren, but did not have a good relationship. That doesn't mean Alonso has no respect for Hamilton's qualities. "Even with the best car you have to deliver every weekend," Alonso told Spain's Marca. "Whether it's dry, raining or whatever. You have to perform when Red Bull has a good weekend and also on circuits where you are actually slower."
Where Verstappen received a lot of compliments for his performance in recent years, Hamilton's is a lot less so. Unjustified, according to Alonso. "It seems at the moment that he is experiencing the ideal moment for his driving skills and his role in the team. You can only achieve that if you perform at top level. I don't know if there is enough appreciation for what he is doing."

GP of Spain

Verstappen drove at the front for a long time during the last race in Barcelona, but the Dutchman was unable to hold on to it. Hamilton had to overtake him at the end of the race.
