Coulthard 'surprised' by FIA silence over heated Verstappen journalist clash

David Coulthard said he was surprised that the FIA did not take any public stance after Max Verstappen asked a journalist to leave during a media session.
The build-up to the Japanese Grand Prix erupted when the four-time world champion took a firm stand, refusing to begin his media session until a specific journalist from The Guardian had left the room.
The incident was later traced back to a question asked by the same reporter after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when Verstappen was pressed on whether he had any regrets over his clash with Russell in Barcelona — an incident that ultimately cost him valuable points in a title fight he lost by just two points to Lando Norris.
Speaking about the episode on the Up to Speed podcast, the former British driver shared his view on the situation, suggesting that, on reflection, Verstappen is unlikely to feel entirely comfortable with how it was handled.

“I see it this way: It’s probably not something that, on reflection, Max will feel good about, because even though he’s absolutely at right, you don’t have to answer the question, it is unusual to ask somebody to leave from that environment.
He then added: “I’m actually a little bit surprised the FIA didn’t take a stance on it. I didn’t see anything that there was any sort of reprimand. Because basically, if he was to say the word sh*t in there, he’d get fined.”

He also pointed out that, despite the current frustrations of running in the midfield, Verstappen still has significant financial reasons to stay, suggesting that his lucrative salary remains a strong incentive to continue.
