Carlos Sainz: "I think the current format still has a lot of potential"

In recent weeks there has been a proposal to play a race on Saturdays with the grid reversed. Many of the top drivers have been against the idea, mainly Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. But Carlos Sainz has a differing opinion to them.
Sainz feels that it's important for the gap between the top teams and the rest to be reduced which would see much more interesting battles throughout the grid.
" I don't think that the inverted grid on Saturdays is a terrible idea, but I think the current format still has a lot of potentials," he said.
"I think the key is to make it possible for cars to follow more closely and have a 20-seater grill that is separated by just one second instead of the three-second difference we currently have.
There is a deadline of October to complete this regulation for the 2021 season, so an announcement is due soon.

"What we need is more unpredictability, but you need to add it naturally and 2021 is a great opportunity.
"There are many things that can be done before starting to change the format.
"However, if the new rules fail to get tighter races, then we might want to look closely at the format and investigate further if inverted grid races are a good idea."
