Rumours have been circling the paddock that Carlos Sainz Sr. is considering a bid to become the next FIA President. The speculation has gained traction in recent weeks, with several insiders suggesting the two-time World Rally Champion is seriously exploring the role. Carlos Sainz Jr. has now shared his thoughts on the rumours. In a discussion including GPblog, Sainz Jr. acknowledged the speculation of his
father being considered as FIA president stating:
"A lot of people in the paddock were kind of putting it in his head and little by little he started considering it and now he's obviously thinking about it."Sainz Jr was asked for an insight into what his father's thoughts on the matter are, "I cannot tell you. I can just tell you that he's considering it seriously. Like he said, he's evaluating all the options."
Carlos made it clear that his dad has not yet prepared for running: "I think the key is that he still hasn't put together a team or a candidature… but he's considering it and depending obviously how he sees it and sees his fit he will go.”
"I'm his son. So I'm biased"
When asked who would be best suited for the position, Carlos clearly argued that his dad would suit the role due to his experience within motorsports, with role as a father of an F1 driver and also being a world known rally driver himself. "He's done 10 years in Formula One with me. He's done 40 years of rallying".
Potential conflict of interest?
This speculation over the past few weeks also followed with criticism that there would be a conflict of interest between son and father in the paddock.
The Williams driver was asked whether this position could have an influence on his own career, to which he responded: "I've been trying to think of scenarios where it could, but I actually don't see any way how that could be seen. If anything, obviously he will be extremely careful.
Carlos expressed that he wouldn't want to cause any controversy: "I will be extremely careful because the last thing that I want is my or his image or career to be damaged by that situation. So if anything, we would do the opposite effect. I don't see any conflict of interest"
A chance to give back to motorsport
Despite his family asking Sainz Sr. whether he would consider retiring that does not seem to be in his plans as his son expressed: "He loves racing."
Sainz Sr. sees this as a chance to end his career on a high note."And he sees there an opportunity to put an end to his racing career, but still do something for the road for still actively you know and find ways to give back to motorsport and to the FIA", his son said.
