Although the French Renault team is currently ranked third in the constructors' championship, it has suffered five breakdowns due to problems with the car this season. In an interview with Auto, Motor und Sport, technical director of Renault, Marcin Budkowski explains.
From an overheating problem during the Styrian GP to a loss of water pressure in Austria caused one of the Renault drivers to be unable to finish his race. In total, the team had to record a DNF five times in 2020 due to problems with the car. Budkowski explains that this is due to the fact that, especially this season, his team is looking to push the limits more, and that is when things tend to break.
“Over the past few years we've always been pretty reliable. But when you start pushing the limit, you pay a price for it somewhere. It just shows that our processes are not yet good enough and that we still do not have enough strength in our organization”,says Budkowski.

Learning from each race

Now, Budkowski argues the key is “to ensure that at least the problems we had are not repeated. But the devil is in the problems you don't know about yet. That can make the difference in the fight between 3rd and 6th place.” “Now it depends on reliability, on the drivers, on the processes on the track.”
