McLaren technical director Eric Boullier says that junior driver Nyck De Vries needs to step his game up if he is hoping to make it to Formula One in the future. The Dutch junior driver is currently driving in Formula 2 with the Prema team.
McLaren has had more recent success with junior drivers, with Lewis Hamilton coming through the ranks with the team as well as current driver Stoffel Vandoorne.
However, Boullier has laid down the marker for De Vries, who himself is competing against fellow McLaren junior driver Lando Norris for a potential future race seat at the team.
"He's been doing with us for a long time, he's doing his work on the simulator, that's part of his role as an F1 team, and he's one of the few drivers we use to develop our simulations during the racing weekend or during races," said Boullier.
"He is part of the F2 team which won the championship last year, a team that can make the results, I think he has good speed but also a few mistakes, and I think he should have more points than they have in the current rankings. we need to give a little more time to see if he can show the speed he has."
