Aston Martin’s Technical Director, Enrico Cardile, working under the team’s Senior Technical Partner Adrian Newey, argues they have found “freedom” within the what he perceives as "over-constrained" F1 2026 regulations. It’s a bit sad that they’re over-constrained but then actually working on them, you find the degree of freedom for developing the car."
- Enrico Cardile.Alongside the changes the power units, tyres and fuel will undergo as of next year, in a bid to, among other things, improve the racing spectacle, F1 will implement a series of profound changes to the technical regulations governing the design and build of the chassis and the aerodynamics of the cars as well.
Met with reservations, the prescribed technical aspects of the 2026 cars were thought to be restrictive by the likes of Newey himself. However, Cardile argues Aston Martin’s technical staff has been able to find the necessary “freedom” to navigate the upcoming regulation change.
“I had the same feeling I remember in 2021 with the new regulation coming, which compared to the previous one, they seemed to be oversimplified, extremely restrictive,” Cardile said in the Beyond the Grid podcast.
“Then when you start working on them, you find that, okay, they are restrictive but actually you have also room for being creative, for finding new solutions, for getting load out of the development.
“So basically, I’m feeling the same when we started looking at them, okay, it’s a bit sad that they’re over-constrained but then actually working on them, you find the degree of freedom for developing the car,” Cardile concluded.
Cardile reveals key Aston Martin advantage ahead of 2026 season
Aston Martin’s 2026 F1 plans have been strengthened by their exclusive power unit partnership with Honda, Cardile argues, as the Japanese manufacturer's single-team focus lets them tailor development to Aston Martin’s requests and push harder due to lower production volumes.
