Aston Martin so deep in trouble it has turned Alonso into an ‘F1 test driver’

Jolyon Palmer believes Aston Martin’s deep technical and performance struggles have effectively turned Fernando Alonso into a 'test driver.'
Aston Martin’s start to the season has proven nothing short of a disaster, despite having a technical genius like Adrian Newey in their ranks, with the Spaniard only managing to see the chequered flag by the third race - and still miles away from anything resembling a competitive performance.
Speaking on F1 Nation, Palmer believes Alonso has almost been taken back to the early days of his career, with what he’s doing now being anything but racing.
"He's a test driver. For the first time in like 25 years he's a Formula 1 test driver and that's all Aston Martin are doing. It's just such a crying shame that they are not even competitive to be... he finished behind the Cadillac, Perez did a good race in Japan but they are so far off and I think that's why to an extent there is nothing to play for for him or Lance.
"Every weekend they turn up, they'll drive around in circles, they'll report a balance. It doesn't even really matter at this stage. The car's down on downforce, but if they can't even get to the end of the race, they can't get near a Q2.

"Just bring us a heap of downforce, lose a bit of weight. So much of the job is clearly on Honda's side. It doesn't look like it's gonna be a quick fix."

How Alonso foresaw Bearman’s major crash ahead of Japanese GP start

He explained that most overtakes now come down to energy deployment, with drivers suddenly finding themselves with more battery than the car ahead and either making an easy pass or running into trouble. In his view, it has become more about avoiding contact than executing a proper overtake.
He also pointed out that traditional elements of racing - such as taking risks, braking later, or attempting different lines through a corner - have largely disappeared. Instead, the outcome is dictated by battery levels, with drivers either gaining positions or losing them depending on their energy situation, leaving little room for variation in the racing.
