It came as a surprise to many that Andrea Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes clinched pole position for the Formula 1 sprint race in Miami. The Italian rookie received widespread acclaim, including from Peter Windsor.
"Mercedes looked really good on Friday afternoon in Miami, really good going into qualifying for the sprint, and they duly got the pole." Windsor started on his YouTube channel with an analysis of the sprint qualifying.
Surprisingly, it was not George Russell, who has been on the podium three times in 2025, converting this speed into a strong result. The Brit had to settle for fifth place.
Windsor continued: "Except that it wasn’t George Russell, it was Kimi Antonelli, 18 years old, who recorded a 26.4 in just his first season in Formula 1 to take the pole for the sprint race."
The Australian journalist, formerly involved in Formula 1, continued with an analysis of the pole lap. "A beautiful lap it was to watch. I have been saying all year how good he [Antonelli] is on slow corners, He is a short corner driver, he looks wonderful."
However, Windsor also identified some weaknesses in the young Mercedes driver, particularly in the medium and high-speed corners. In Miami, however, "[there are] plenty of corners where he can show his talent."

Is Antonelli the new Verstappen?

In turn 7, Antonelli truly stood out from the rest of the field; the long left-hander was where the Italian made the difference. Pointing out this impressive feat, Windsor said: "Here, Kimi was really outdoing Lando, he just looked fabulous. Everything was very patient, very controlled. Looking like a Max Verstappen when he’s got lots and lots of grip. Just wonderful to watch through there."
