Starting from P7, Alonso's race looked like it could be another chance for the Aston Martin outfit to score another strong points finish after what's been a very inconsistent season for the Silverstone-based outfit. However, as fate would have it, -bad- luck would strike at the Spanird yet again.
As the race started, Liam Lawson charged into McLaren Oscar Piastri's car at Turn 1.
“Lawson, in turn one, he needs maybe a penalty,” Alonso told Aston Martin race engineer Andrew Vizard.
“Unbelievable turn one man,” he stated in reference to his highest qualifying position since the Hungarian Grand Prix being so quickly thrown out the window.

'Kamikaze' Lawson ruins Alonso's top 10 start in Las Vegas

“One time we start at the front and there’s a kamikaze in the inside,” Alonso added. When told by Vizard that the team had reported Lawson for triggering the race satrt chaos, Alonso saw the futility behind the action saying: “Yeah, but he’s out of the race now, so I mean there is no penalty to serve. Crazy.”
Having looked at the matter the race officials saw no reason to impose further sanctions on Lawson stating that his collision with Piastri had been a result of an evasive manoeuvre to avoid slamming into the back of George Russell who also had to take measures to avoid Carlos Sainz.
