Fernando Alonso was the only one who managed to start the race on the soft tyres, a strategy that had been under consideration since Thursday. In the end, the Spaniard finished in sixth place, with which he is very happy.
So the Spaniard started on the soft tyres. The reason is quite simple: "We didn't have any other tyre available. So we chose, since Thursday, we were thinking that that was the best strategy to have soft, medium, hard into the race. It's what we executed," said Alonso, who occupies eighth place in the drivers' standings.
"I didn't feel any big penalty on the first stint on the stop. It was more or less okay. So yes, I think it was not too bad," Alonso continued.

A good base for Aston Martin

Whether there is a good basis for the car remains to be seen by Alonso: "I think there are a couple of things in the pipeline to improve the car. I think this first package is just the baseline of what we will introduce later in the season," said the two-time world champion after the race.

The level of pit stops is also going up fast at Aston Martin: "We are executing very well on Sundays, maximising the points. So even more than what we deserve normally. Pit stops were great. Actually, on the second stop when I saw the green light and I went, I said, maybe they didn't change all four tires. Because this is, for me, felt like the fastest ever."
