The fans of Max Verstappen had a great night on Sunday, with a clear victory for the Dutchman in Mexico. For the neutral viewer the race in Mexico was perhaps less interesting. There were not many overtakes. It did not help the tension.

Brawn proves himself right

Overtaking proved - not for the first time this season - to be a major problem. Only with a very large speed difference was it possible to pass another driver. Now that F1 is more competitive than ever, however, these differences are few and far between. The way Valtteri Bottas tried to pass Ricciardo's McLaren (also equipped with a Mercedes engine) for laps in vain was telling.

F1 boss Ross Brawn saw in this (and a few other examples) once again he was right for what is going to happen in 2022. "The race was another example of why we need the new technical rules that are coming in next season as it showed how challenging it is for the cars to get close enough to launch an overtake," says Brawn on the website of F1

Driving closer to each other

The new regulations should make it possible next season to stay closer to your predecessor, without getting too much into hot air. F1's philosophy is that driving closer to each other will increase the number of overtakes.
