Callum Ilott is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy but was previously active at Red Bull Racing. The British racing talent was on the Red Bull Junior Programme for a year, which was not a great success for him.

The Austrian team initially saw a lot of potential in Ilott, but after one year Helmut Marko didn't see enough potential in the driver anymore. At Ferrari he got the trust to develop himself further. "It had to be like this. You get a certain position and you have to make the best of it", says Ilott afterwards in conversation with Autosport.com.

Although Red Bull has had many great talents enter its junior programme in recent years, it is remarkable that the team decided to let Ilott leave. "Red Bull has had a lot of success with its juniors," judged Illott, who struggled with the format of the programme. "It just doesn't work with everyone. Everyone is just different."

Opportunities for Ilott

Behind the scenes, Ilott is hoping for a chance at Ferrari, but that possibility is small for now. With Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, the Italians have two excellent drivers who can be found in sixth and seventh place in the world championship. Leclerc even had a chance to win during the British Grand Prix, but Lewis Hamilton passed him in the final stage.
