Toto Wolff believes George Russell should have been more patient in the second Grand Prix of the season in Imola. The 23-year-old Briton was behind Bottas and wanted to overtake him using DRS, but the duel ended in tears and resulted in two completely destroyed cars.

Russell stated afterwards that Bottas might not have defended so aggressively against another. When Wolff was asked about that comment by Sky's German arm, the Austrian replied, "That's bullsh*t. He's just annoyed that the car was completely destroyed. That's particularly a worry this year under the new cost cap."

Wolff argues that the money is now needed to rebuild the car so it cannot be used for anything else. The damage from Bottas' crash runs into the hundreds of thousands of euros. The budget ceiling for 2021 has been set at $145 million.

Risk taken too big

Russell is one of the main contenders to race for Mercedes next season. However, according to Wolff, the Williams driver should not be concerned with that at all while driving."I don't want him to try to prove something to us," Wolff said, pointing out that the track was wet and the manoeuvre too risky as a result.
