Toto Wolff called the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia "one of my worst experiences" after George Russell's power unit failed five laps from the finish.
Russell was running third behind Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli when he parked his car on the main straight during the late Safety Car period. As a result, Antonelli now leads his teammate by 84 points in the drivers' standings.
Wolff spoke to Sky Sports F1 after the race and made no attempt to hide how he felt. The Austrian said: "It’s a power unit failure (for Russell). It wasn’t caused by the Safety Car. We haven’t assessed it yet. I’m so massively annoyed, and not in a happy place."
Wolff: 'You couldn't be more unlucky'
Mercedes arrived in Sepang with a significant upgrade but seemed to gain little from it. Wolff said the team had a lot of work ahead.

"First of all, we didn’t have the speed that we were hoping to have before the weekend, so there’s a lot of homework to be done in order to recover, which I’m sure we will."
He continued: "Then the race literally, if you consider the fight with Lewis behind, went against us. We had such an advantage, one VSC, two Safety Cars, you couldn’t be more unlucky. And to make things worse, a PU failure with a few laps to go until the end for George, which is terrible for his championship and not good at all for our constructors’ points."
Russell also sounded resigned after the race when speaking to Sky Sports: "You’ve almost got to laugh. I’m beyond disappointment. It’s just so many times this season it’s happened.. It's a real shame."
Sepang brings back memories of Hamilton in 2016
Ten years ago, Hamilton started from pole and was leading comfortably when his engine failed on lap 40 of 56 of the Malaysian Grand Prix. His teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg recovered to third and extended his championship lead to 23 points.

Hamilton won the last four races of that season but lost the title to Rosberg by five points. Russell himself now admitted a title fightback is "exceptionally unlikely".
Russell loses another podium because of a reliability issue
This was Russell's third retirement of 2026 and his second for purely technical reasons. The first technical failure came in Canada in May, when he stopped on lap 30 while battling Antonelli.
