Imola is a classic track that punishes mistakes very harshly. The rookies in Formula 1 will have to be extra careful that this track doesn't get the better of them. Yuki Tsunoda showed in his first flying lap during qualifying how big the consequences of a small mistake can be.

It didn't look overly reckless at all what Tsunoda did in the Variante Alta, but once the grip was gone, there was no stopping him either. "Just pushing too much entry. Until then the lap felt great. Potentially it was easy to go through Q1 on one tyre," said Tsunoda guiltily to Sky Sports.

Possible new gearbox for Tsunoda

He's probably already realised that this crash will have consequences for the race as well. With a new gearbox, he'll have to start from the pit lane and given the damage to the rear of the AlphaTauri, that's likely. "It looked pretty bad. I'm really sorry for the team. Just reset and come back stronger tomorrow. I'm more worried about the car than myself," said Tsunoda.

Because overtaking is very difficult at Imola in the dry, the Japanese driver is unlikely to score any points from the back. Therefore he hopes that a little rain will spoil things. The weather forecast says there is a good chance of that.
