Many young F2 drivers have strong ties with an F1 team. For example, Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott and Robert Schwartzman are all part of the Ferrari junior team, Yuki Tsunoda has ties with Honda and Christain Lundgaard belongs to Renault. The latter driver could cause a lot of problems within Renault, which will be driving next year under the name Alpine.

The driver from Denmark is driving in Formula 2 for the first time this season and already has two victories to his name. This puts him in fourth place in the championship, between Schwartzman and Tsunoda. The gap with the Japanese rider on P3 is only two points, making a top three ranking in the F2 standings a real possibility. However, there will be no place for the young driver at Renault until at least 2022.

Place at Red Bull?

SoyMotor.com thinks that if Lungaard can't get a place at Renault, there are still plenty of options for the young Dane to go to F1. "Lundgaard's position could be interesting for teams such as Red Bull Racing, who, due to the departure of Honda, no longer have a major interest in Yuki Tsunoda as second driver at AlphaTauri."

Another option would be to let Lundgaard drive in the meantime in another racing class, such as the Japanese Super Formula. Stoffel Vandoorne and Pierre Gasly made that step before they ended up in F1. In any case, Lundgaard still has to wait for his chance at Renault, because Esteban Ocon has a contract until 2021 and Fernando Alonso until 2022.
