Formula 1 wants to make the difference between the teams smaller, making it more exciting and giving the smaller teams a chance to compete for the championship. Many ideas for this have already been put forward and the first improvements should be visible at the start of the new regulations. However, this regulation will be delayed, as the introduction has been postponed to 2022.

Limiting aerodynamics

There is a plan to limit the development of aerodynamics based on the results. This would relate to wind tunnel use and CFD development work. Haas team boss Guenther Steiner is happy with this, because it ensures a better competition.

In conversation with RaceFans Steiner says: "That would be a help, that if you finish [badly] that you can move up the grid. It’s all part of the discussions in the moment. It’s not as drastic as it sounds. It gives the less successful teams a chance to make some gains, toward the big ones and the big ones may be coming down."

"I think it’s fair. And it doesn’t stop technology development. It keeps on still F1 being the top technology motorsport."

Retrieval

Steiner also argues that this idea will keep Formula 1 DNA intact, helping small teams catch up after a bad year. It also depends on the capabilities of a team: "But if you are useless or if you’re not a good team, it doesn’t help you a lot."

So from that perspective, it's a fair way for the teams to narrow the gap. With this idea the teams get the chance, but it is up to them to make it happen.
