Sergey Sirotkin admits Formula 1 return "very unlikely"

Sergey Sirotkin believes that his chance to return to racing in Formula 1 is minimal. The Russian racer used to drive for Williams in 2018 and has been Renault and McLaren's reserve driver for the last season. A year away from racing has given Sirotkin some time to reflect and he has made some decisions about his future.

"This year taught me to love your job. It is in the years when you do not have the opportunity to race that you really understand that this is your calling," Sirotkin said to GPToday.net.

"Given the circumstances, last year I sometimes started to lose that feeling. So I needed to move away from everything and come back with new thoughts."

Formula 1 is still regarded as the pinnacle of motorsport and few people would ever turn down an offer but Sirotkin is realistic and believes that his opportunity has passed him by.

"I would love to come back [to racing]," he said. "But I'm not talking about Formula 1.

"We understand that this is very difficult. I dream about it and still believe I have something to show, but objectively speaking, this is very unlikely.

"I definitely want to return to racing but I want it to be a new start, after which it would be possible to build a further career."

Sirotkin is a fast driver who will be able to have success in a number of different racing series. It will be interesting to see if he does make a return and how much his time away will impact him.
