Honda could be the latest manufacturer to join the ranks of Formula E after the Japanese company confirmed there is interest in a future entry to the series.

Global motoring brands such as Audi, BMW and more recently Porsche and Mercedes have joined the all-electric racing series since its debut back in 2014.

With the number of the industries biggest names continuing to register interest and form plans about a potential foray into Formula E, Honda is the latest name that could make the jump into the series.

Honda F1 managing director Masashi Yamamoto admitted that there could be a future entry by the Japanese manufacturer, but added that it was more of an advertising opportunity to the company rather than outright racing.

“Formula E is done inside of cities, as a street race, and it’s kind of like advertising using racing, rather than pure [traditional] racing,” Yamamoto explained to Motorsport.com.

“As Honda, we have conversations with Alejandro Agag. We are always keeping eyes on the category. We have announced our electric car already, which is going to be on sale in Europe soon.

“There are many Honda customers who are interested in our electric cars so it’s good to appeal to them. And there must be technology we can take away from the races to the road cars. That’s the reason we have interest.”
