Nico Hulkenberg believes Charles Leclerc's move on him during Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix was a result of the Monegasque driver being "impatient" and "too ambitious".

Leclerc started the day back in P15 and had gained three places before trying to narrowly pass Hulkenberg through a corner. However, the Ferrari driver's right rear tyre clipped the side and ultimately punctured - forcing him into a half-spin.

Hulkenberg survived the slight contact between the pair, despite being forced to pit for a puncture - but there wasn't such luck for Leclerc - who was eventually forced to retire from his home-race early.

The Renault driver said that Leclerc demonstrated his impatience and frustration with the forced move.

"You know he came, first of all, from quite far back and then I didn't leave much of a gap anyway," Hulkenberg said on Leclerc. "And I saw that he launched and I played fair and opened the steering and tried to leave him some space, and tried to let us both lift.

"He spun, he just kissed me - I didn't hit the wall or anything, but he sliced my rear tyre open. I think he was definitely too ambitious in that moment."

The Hulk admitted he was warned by his race engineer about Leclerc's potential charge and that move: "I was aware of that, my engineer told me that, I could sense it coming but you've still got to weigh up your chances as a driver and know when it's a real opportunity or when (it's) not.

"But I think he was a bit impatient there today, obviously frustrated after yesterday (Saturday) and wanted to get through the field - but it's Monaco and it doesn't work like that always."
