It has been revealed that talks for a new contract for the Italian Grand Prix are still ongoing between Liberty Media and the venue itself.

Every Italian Grand Prix since the inception of the World Championship has been held at Monza apart from in 1980 when it was moved to Imola. Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher hold the record for the most wins at the track with five.

The track want to improve their current deal and they are looking for a payment of 20 million euros to fund this year’s race.

ACI President Sticchi Damiani spoke about the current negotiations and described them as “stringent, complicated and difficult".

"Thanks to the Lombardy Region, we have managed to find a balance, which expires this year, with 2019, and that we must renew for the next few years,” Damiani said at ExpoMove.

"There are very stringent, complicated and difficult negotiations ongoing with Liberty Media, who have inherited too many onerous and unsustainable contracts.

"There are a number of things we need to change because the times have evolved: the management of the site, a reception in line with the times and the need for a promoter with a focus on Monza sustaining the Italian Grand Prix as one of the most important rounds of the F1 World Championship.
