Williams: We can "fight for P4" in 2019

09-02-2019 08:14

Claire Williams believes her team will bounce back dramatically in 2019 and suggests they can fight for the 'best of the rest spot'.

The team principal also said Williams have the resources and budget to make these changes before the 2021 overhaul. In 2018, Williams finished bottom of the constructors' championship, but changes to the driver line-up weave in fresh air.

Robert Kubica makes his return to the British team while youngster George Russell makes his debut in Formula 1. Williams' expectations are high.

"We’re still a team competing with a very healthy budget, we’re still a team competing with phenomenal resources at Williams, and we have a great team of people here,” Williams told RACER.

“I don’t see why we aren’t able to fight back in that midfield and to fight for P4."

The 2021 changes are expected to help teams like Williams who are struggling financially in comparison to the budget of Mercedes and Ferrari. And Williams insists her team don't have to wait around for these changes.

"I don’t believe that we have to wait and that’s certainly not the mindset that we have here, that we’re just treading water until 2021," she added.

"That’s a really important message that certainly we’ve relayed internally but to the outside world — that we’re here competing, we’re not just making up the numbers until the landscape changes to better suit us."

Williams will announce their new title partner on February 11 and also show us their livery.
