Pierre Gasly’s promotion to a seat in Red Bull is encouraging him to follow a similar path to Sebastian Vettel.

The Frenchman had been at Toro Rosso, Red Bulls sister team, for a year and a half before being given a promotion, similar to Vettel when he raced for them at the start of his Formula 1 career.

Speaking to Motorsport.com Gasly said “The only people I look at are the ones that succeeded.”

“I look at Seb. Seb did the same thing as me, one and a half year in Toro Rosso, jumped to Red Bull, had a successful time straight away.”

Vettel had great success when he moved to the Red Bull senior team, winning four drivers’ championships in a row between 2010-13, before the introduction of the hybrid era in 2014 and an eventual move to Ferrari in 2015.

Gasly replaces Daniel Ricciardo after the Australian opted for a move away to Renault for 2019. He will partner Max Verstappen who also was promoted to the senior team after short while with Toro Rosso, winning on his debut race with them in Spain 2016.

“Max did the same, had a successful time straight away,” he said.

“So, you know, it’s all up to me. I don’t want to look at people that failed.”

“Of course you can look at what went wrong and learn also from them, but I’m inspired with the people that succeed. Those are the ones I take as examples. It’s possible, people have done it before.”
