Lewis Hamilton is facing a backlash from a comment he made about his hometown Stevenage during an on-stage interview at BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year awards.
Hamilton was among the nominees for the main prize and finished second behind cyclist Geraint Thomas. While talking to Gabby Logan he said, “It’s been a really long journey, a dream for us all, as a family, to do something different, to get out of the slums.”
"Well, we would say it's not the slums, but just come out from somewhere and do something."
The Mercedes driver has yet to comment on the matter but has received critical comments on social media as well as some support.
Stevenage is about 30 miles north of London and it’s property prices today are just above the national average for the country.

Stevenage Borough Council leader has said that Hamilton’s comments were “disappointing” and that people had felt “very offended,” (dailystar.co.uk).
