Spain seems to be heading for two Grands Prix. Madrid is pushing hard for a street race, but Barcelona is not giving up the fight for a place on the F1 calendar and now even seems to be considering a street race.

There is every indication that Formula 1 will host a Grand Prix in Madrid in 2026. The Spanish capital has been trying to snare the top class of motorsport for some time and seems to have succeeded. The Spanish GP is currently still organised in Barcelona at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, but the contract expires after 2026.

Two Grands Prix in Spain?

So after 2026, there would still be one Spanish GP on the F1 calendar, but in Madrid instead of Barcelona. In Catalonia, however, they are now working on a new proposal. Formula 1 is leaning more towards street racing and so Barcelona is looking at whether it can meet those wishes. According to Soymotor, Barcelona would like to return to the Montjuïc circuit.

The Montjuïc circuit is a street circuit on Mount Montjuïc in Barcelona. It is a unique street race, having already hosted Formula 1 races in 1969, 1971, 1973 and 1975. The combination of racing in the city and a combination of fast corners should make this a more suitable venue than the current circuit just outside the city.

Spain could have two Grands Prix at home with this idea. The street race in Madrid looks set to happen in 2026 anyway, and with this idea, Barcelona hopes to keep a second GP in Spain on the calendar. It is aiming for a 10-year deal with F1, extending the current contract that runs until 2026 through 2035 or 2026. It is still unclear whether F1 also sees this plan.
