There are only six races left on the schedule for the remainder of this Formula 1 season, yet the chance, that a driver has to miss a race due to penalty points, is still there. We saw at Suzuka during the Japanese Grand Prix how Sergio Perez drove his car to the pit box, then climbed back into the RB19, and then re-entered the track. The Red Bull driver is shared leader in penalty points. GPblog lists the state of play there.

Leaders Perez and Stroll

The two leaders in the standings are Perez and Lance Stroll. Both have seven points in the penalty points standings. There are no major implications for seven penalty points yet, but twelve points will cash in on a 'race ban', because obviously it means you are not allowed to compete in one race.

Penalty points are handed out for driver offences, with the amount varying depending on the severity of the incident. Exactly one year after the offence committed, the points given are erased. Perez currently stands on seven penalty points, but even before the Qatar GP, two will be undone. Indeed, the Mexican picked up these points at the 2022 Singapore GP, which was held on 2 October.

Despite the fact that Canadian Stroll is co-leader in the standings, the Aston Martin driver only gained two penalty points this season. His remaining five points will expire in October and November, so he too does not seem to have to worry about possibly being excluded from a Grand Prix.

How many penalty points does Verstappen have?

Max Verstappen did not yet score any penalty points this season, but he does stand on a total of two, due to his collision with Lewis Hamilton at the 2022 Brazil GP. Hamilton himself is on four points. He gained these at this season's Italian Grand Prix for an incident with Oscar Piastri and the Belgian Grand Prix for an incident with, leader in the standings, Perez.

The penalty points classification of Formula 1 drivers

Other drivers also still have penalty points to their names. There are drivers who are currently no longer racing in the king class of motorsport, but still have points to their name. These include Nicholas Latifi (four points), Mick Schumacher (three points) and Nyck de Vries (two points).
