Ferrari is having anything but an optimal season in Formula 1 so far. In-race strategies are still often misplanned, and if that is not the culprit Charles Leclerc or Carlos Sainz does park his car in the wall. Gerhard Berger also sees this situation at Ferrari. The Austrian thinks Frederic Vasseur needs more time.

Vasseur needs time

"Vasseur is a capable and experienced team boss, but he cannot do it alone. He needs good people by his side. At Red Bull, for example, there are three of them: Christian Horner, Helmut Marko and Adrian Newey. I think a combination of Vasseur and Mattia Binotto would work, because the latter is a brilliant engineer," Berger told La Gazetta.

The former Austrian Formula One driver, who finished third in the world championship a total of three times, says you should not change team bosses too quickly. He links this to an anecdote from his racing days where Schumacher played a heroic role.

Horner also got time

"Changing too often is harmful. I remember well when Luca di Montezemolo, wanted to replace Jean Todt because several years had gone by without winning the world championship. It was Michael Schumacher who stopped that. And that team ended up being the most successful in Ferrari's history," said the 63-year-old Berger.

Berger makes the link with Red Bull Racing's past choices. "Similarly, I remember when Dietrich Mateschit, wanted to replace Christian Horner after four seasons because the team was not winning. Retaining him was one of Red Bull's strengths. A few months are not enough, Vasseur needs more time."
