Jenson Button believes that the 2019 changes could close up the top teams and make for a closer title fight. The regulations will force teams to simplify front wings in the hopes of closer racing by allowing drivers to follow another car easier in dirty air.
The ex-McLaren driver said that he was hopeful of a closer battle at the front of the field and that it would benefit the long-term health of Formula One if the wheel-to-wheel battles were commonplace next season.
“There are so many changes in the sport at the moment and that’s exactly what the sport needs," he told Sky Sports News.
"I think we will have three teams battling at the front and, if we do, there will be some fantastic fights.”
Red Bull has played a peripheral role in the fight for the championship in the last two seasons, with Ferrari and Mercedes clear favourites for a title challenge. However, with design genius Adrian Newey at the team, the revamped aero rules could leapfrog Red Bull into the picture and spoil the German and Italian party.
