This is how Verstappen can become world champion at the Singapore Grand Prix
Max Verstappen has scored his fifth consecutive victory at the Italian Grand Prix. The Dutchman's lead in the driver's championship is now so big that Verstappen can mathematically win the world title as early as the next race, the Singapore Grand Prix.
Verstappen can take the title in Singapore
Verstappen has now collected 335 World Championship points. The number two in the championship, Charles Leclerc, only has 219 points. Sergio Perez is in third place with 210 points, while George Russell has collected 203 points. There are still six races to go, but with a 119-point lead, Verstappen can already secure his second world title in Singapore on Sunday, October 2. There are three different scenarios for the Red Bull Racing driver to take home the championship in the next race.
Verstappen will have to win the race to have a chance of winning the title in Singapore. If he finishes second or lower, the battle will continue at the Japanese Grand Prix. With victory and fastest lap, Verstappen will win the title if Leclerc finishes ninth or lower, Perez fourth or lower and Russell second or lower. Perez and Russell can mathematically also win the title, although that chance is not realistic.
If Verstappen wins but does not set the fastest lap, Leclerc must finish ninth without setting the fastest lap. Perez and Russell need to finish in the same position as in scenario 1. If Leclerc finishes tenth or lower, Verstappen will have the world title. There is little chance that the Ferrari driver will finish outside the top five, but in Formula 1 unexpected things often happen. The wrong strategy, a driver error or an incident with another driver could prevent Leclerc from finishing in the points. One thing is certain: it is only a matter of time until Verstappen takes home his second world title.
