Charles Leclerc finally had the chance to win his home race at Monaco this season. According to former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button, the Monegasque did nothing wrong, but a strategic error ultimately caused him to miss out on the win.

Leclerc was in the lead in Monaco until the drivers had to change from rain tires to intermediates or slicks. While teammate Carlos Sainz went from rain tires to slicks in one go, Leclerc was put on the intermediates for only a few laps. Then the Monegasque also came to a brief halt behind his teammate in the pits. In the end, Leclerc had to make do with fourth position.

Another lack of success in Monaco for Leclerc.

"He didn’t put a foot wrong all weekend. He’s always been extremely quick around Monaco," Button revealed to Sky Sports F1. "It must haunt him this Grand Prix, his home Grand Prix. For so many years he’s had the opportunity to win but it was taken away from him."

Button, who won the Monaco GP himself in 2009, says it is difficult to lead in Monaco under changing conditions. The Brit says you can take more risks when you're driving up front, but this time the risk didn't work out well for Leclerc. Still, Button praised Leclerc: "He wasn’t making any mistakes and that’s difficult to do around Monaco."
