Verstappen highlights pain point: 'I'm sure we can improve on that'

So far, the new rules are doing what they were intended to do: tracking is easier in the new Formula 1 cars and the same goes for overtaking, although that often still requires DRS. How effective do the top three at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix think the new rules are?

Despite the new rules, race winner Max Verstappen experiences that it is still difficult to follow each other. "If you are within a second it's hard to follow because of our cornering speed in an F1 car. It will always be like that," he told the post-race press conference.

Verstappen points to Pirelli tyres

Yet he does think racing has improved. The problem is, according to Verstappen, in the tyres, which overheat when a driver is right behind another car. This is being worked on together with Pirelli, where the drivers have a say in what they want and what can be improved.

The Dutchman emphasises that it is also very difficult for Pirelli because it is a completely new concept. "We haven't really done a lot of testing so I'm sure now in the coming months or maybe for next year, we can improve thing," said the reigning world champion.

Perez and Norris join words Verstappen

Sergio Perez agrees with his teammate's words. He stresses that the rules have brought improvement, but that in Imola it was very difficult to overtake. "We could only drive on one line and you had to make sure you were on that," says the Mexican. Overtaking stragglers was also difficult due to the wet asphalt outside the ideal line.

Lando Norris concurs with the Red Bull Racing drivers' words. "It's 100 percent better. It's what they intended to do and the reason for the changes are working," said the Briton. "I think you have been seeing better races this year than for many years."
