The controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been nominated for a British Academy Film Award. In the sports category, the British choose the most important sporting moment of 2021, and this year that includes the battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Along with the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs are the most important awards in the film industry. This year, the season finale in Abu Dhabi has a chance to win the award, where Hamilton and Verstappen started the race with an equal number of points. In the end, the Dutchman managed to overtake his rival on the last lap of the race for his first world title.

In addition to the F1 race, the Tokyo Olympics are also nominated, as well as the semi-final of the European Football Championship between England and Denmark. Finally, one of the most important races in equestrian sports, The Grand National, also has a chance to win the award.

F1 nominated for BAFTA before

This is not the first time an F1 race has been nominated for a BAFTA. For example, the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix was nominated, where Romain Grosjean's car went up in flames after crashing hard into the barriers. The popular Netflix show Drive To Survive is defending this year's title of "Best Factual Sound," which was won at last year's BAFTA TV Craft Awards.
