Sergio Perez won in Baku, but otherwise had an uneven season. While his teammate competed for the win in almost every Grand Prix, Perez had to fight his way through the midfield on several occasions. While Perez was ultimately useful to Max Verstappen in the title race, the Mexican's volatility meant Red Bull missed out on the constructors' title.

Other Philosophy

All in all - and it's the case with many drivers who join a new team - Perez had a difficult start at Red Bull. It took him a while to understand the car, after years of familiarity with the very different cars of Racing Point and Force India. Speedweek A recent report from Red Bull quoted Perez as saying that this different philosophy made all the difference in a negative way.

"So it took some getting used to the chassis and the engine," Perez said in an interview with various media, around the closing Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi. "It didn't help that we could hardly test. There was only a day and a half scheduled for the season for each regular driver. But looking back, I would still describe the year as promising. Of course I had hoped for more. But together we are only getting stronger."

Better for the day

In the latter part of the season Perez showed his potential more often. He says he started to understand the car better and better. Small details that made just that little difference. For next season Perez is therefore not worried. The Mexican is convinced that he will be better next season.
