Fabio Di Giannantonio won the Catalan Grand Prix after he was involved in a scary incident as debris hit his bike after Alex Marquez's crash. Following the red flag, the Italian was able to restart and ultimately took the full 25 points. Joan Mir and Fermin Aldeguer completed the podium.
Acosta got off to a strong start and managed to hold the lead ahead of Alex Marquez, while Raul Fernandez stayed close behind in third. By Turn 6, the Trackhouse rider had moved up to second, as Alex Marquez narrowly avoided a crash with Jorge Martin as the two made contact.
On the third lap, Martin and Alex Marquez went wheel-to-wheel once again and made contact, dropping the Gresini rider to fifth place. Into the next corner, Martin also overtook Johann Zarco to move up to third, while Fernandez continued his pursuit of Acosta for first place.
On Lap 5, the Trackhouse rider took the lead from his KTM rival into Turn 1, while Alex Marquez once again moved ahead of Martin into third place. After coming through his hard-fought battles, Marquez began closing the gap to Fernandez and Acosta at the front, and by the end of Lap 8 he was within four tenths of a second. Heading into Lap 9, Acosta reclaimed the lead from the Trackhouse rider, and one lap later, Marquez pulled off the same move on Fernandez into Turn 1.
On Lap 12, the race was turned on its head after Acosta suffered a bike issue on the back straight. The KTM rider raised his hand to signal the issue, but Alex Marquez, running close behind, made contact with him, ran onto the grass and crashed heavily. Debris from the Gresini bike also caused Fabio Di Giannantonio to crash. The incident immediately brought out the red flag. The medical director confirmed that all riders were conscious.

The red flag restarts

Acosta, Di Giannantonio and Fernandez were all able to be on the restart grid after the incident, while Alex Marquez was taken to hospital for further examination after his scary crash.
After the restart, Acosta remained in the lead, while multiple riders, including Johann Zarco, Francesco Bagnaia and Luca Marini, were involved in a crash at Turn 1, triggering a second red flag.
On the third restart, Acosta once again held the lead. Further back, Fernandez made contact with Martin into Turn 5, eliminating the Aprilia factory rider from points contention and meaning Marco Bezzecchi retained his lead in the standings. The stewards, however, opted not to penalise the Trackhouse rider. After the opening lap of the this restart, Acosta led ahead of Mir and Bagnaia.
With five laps to go, Acosta continued to set the pace at the front, now ahead of Mir and Di Giannantonio. Into Turn 10, the Italian moved up into second place, before nearly taking the lead at Turn 1. With three laps to go, the Italian went for a move into Turn 10, and made it stick.

Di Giannantonio began to pull away at the front, and heading into the final lap, Mir overtook Acosta into Turn 1, while Aldeguer also moved up into third place at Turn 3. In the final corner, Acosta lost everything after crashing out following contact with Ai Ogura. A three-second penalty relegated the Japanese rider to ninth place.
UPDATE: After the race, the stewards handed five drivers - including podium sitter Mir, Toprak Razaglioglu, Jack Miller, Raul Fernandez, Alex Rins - a 16-second time penalty for low tyre pressure. This meant that Bagnaia was promoted to the podium, who was also investigated, but was not handed a penalty. See the updated results below!
